Cathedral City Real Estate for Sale
"Affordable real estate in the Valley"

The original inhabitants of Cathedral City were the Cahuilla Indians, who lived throughout the Coachella Valley. In 1850, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers noticed that the canyons of the area resembled the interior of a grand cathedral, giving rise to the city's future name. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians established their reservation in 1876, which encompasses over 25 percent of todays Cathedral City. The first sub-division, developed in 1925, was named Cathedral City by the developers.

Cathedral City was incorporated in 1981, and today includes within its borders areas on both sides of Interstate 10. The city lies between Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage. With a current population of over 47,000, the city is the second largest in the Valley. It has four elementary schools and a high school with over 2000 students. The new public library and sport facilities, including the new high school stadium, are among the best in the area.

The new City Hall and Police Department building was recently completed as part of the city's major downtown redevelopment which also features a multiple screen movie theater as well as Coachella Valley's only IMAX theater.

With a young population, the median age of city residents is only 32 years of age. There are presently over 18,000 housing units with over 10 percent of units used for seasonal use. The city features many types of housing, from mid-century modern styles to the many new housing developments presently being constructed in the typical Southern California/Mediterranean style. The city has plenty of room for further development, especially on the northern side of the city. According to Multiple Listing Service statistics, the average sales price in 2004 was $274,000, although the average two-bedroom condo could be purchased for around $200,000.
